what are the differences between software builds and software versions?

what is the role of software builds like private, integration and release builds in software development life cycle? What kind of documentation is required at build level? Can i allocate version no to a build and when version allocation came into action?

The main difference between Build and Release in Software Testing is that Build is a version of a software the development team hands over to the testing team for testing purposes while Release is a software the testing team hands over to the customer. Software development is a complicated process.
