Most commonly used Change Management tools?

Pradeep Prabhu's picture

Dear all,

I would like to know the most popularly used Change management tools (both Open Source as well as Proprietary). It will be helpful if you could briefly outline the difference between these tools. Also, is there any universal tool that can be used for multiple purposes like Change/bug tracking/release etc.,?

Appreciate your response!

Regards,

Pradeep

We use PTC (former MKS) Integrity for version control and change management and bug tracking and are quite happy with it.

It is quite expensive, but worth it.

Pradeep,

it would be helpful to clarify the functions that you are thinking about. Are you thinking of Change Management narrowly from the view of managing change requests or the broader perspective of application lifecycle management?

Hi Bob,

I was looking at this from the broader application lifecycle perspective. I know of tools like OTRS that is used for tracking Change Requests and service tickets. But, wasn't sure of tools used for multiple purpose.

Using BMC remedy which is based on ITIL best practices

Pradeep,

OTRS is a Help Desk and IT Service Management system. There are quite a few others that implement various functions that are described within the ITIL v3 framework. Some of these products implement workflow automation, but the better ones come with workflows (straight out of the box) that help you implement the best practices described within ITIL v3.

What you need to do is to explain what you need to do in business terms and then it will be easier to talk about which tools address your requirements.

Thanks Ajay and Micha!

Hi Bob,

From business perspective, the requirements are simple:

1. Support for Change Control (ITIL Operations), Change Management (ITIL Transition) and Incident Management (ITIL Operations) features.

2.  Using this unified tool, the transition and Operations team must be able to track changes and incidents caused due to changes in an effective way.

These are just hypothetical requirements!

Here we use:

- BMC Remedy for the request

- CA SCM for the control version, source versioning, release management

- BMC Bladelogic for the deployment

- BMC BAO for the integration between SCM and Bladelogic
