All.

I was hoping if someone could give me some advise regarding PVCS Tracker which keeps hanging. The issue started around the beginning of the year but wasn't a major issue as only occured maybe once a week or so. Since then however the problem has got gradually worse until now the system hangs maybe 4-5 times per day

We are using PVCS Tracker version 7.1.00 [build 632]

Any help, advise or direction regarding this will be much appreciated.

regards.
Ian.

Ian,

What do you do to get the haning up part to end? Do you reboot the server? What is the DB back end? I would recommend upgrading to Tracker 8.03 as one possible solution.

Joe

we do nothing to stop the hanging. it simply comes back after a minute or 2. doesn't sound too bad but when it happens a good few times a day (along with the amount of work config has to do), it can become a nightmare

I have checked the tracker admin and can find loads of old users sleeping...hundreeds in fact, and quite a few sessions for each user.

could that be the problem and if so what needs to be done to clear them off?

when you ask what is the db back end... what do you mean by that?

thanks again, apologies if the questions/answers sound stupid. i'm not exactly a technical guru myself...

Hey Ian,

Have you considered migrating to a more up to date SCM system?

tell me about it. we are totally in the dark ages over here...even still using VSS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is all being looked into (and has been a for quite a while) but when you are the only config, build, release person in the entire company and there are currently 800+ changes going through the system with 20+ developers constantly making changes, the time to investigate all of that just does not exist!

Wow, complete dark ages! Realistically you're going to keep having problems that slow you down with something as old as PVCS, so I suppose it depends how much time you want to spend fixing those issues vs. time looking at new SCM! I'm an SVN fan through and through, so if you ever need any help/advice about migrating (and the least time consuming ways to do it!) let me know!

SVN Tortoise I believe we are looking at transfering to. Believe we are going to trial the next project and see how it goes. If thats OK and I need assistance transferring all current/previous projects then at least I know where to come now ;)

Will be fun (NOT) for the time being though....managing SVN Tortoise, VSS (waterfall development - manually built by myself), VSS (agile development - autobuild machine( and also I have literally just discovered that one of my devlopment teams have decided to install TFS and work part of their code on there (all without telling ANYONE else!!!)

What is wrong with developers? why do they live in their own little world?

(rant over)

How on earth can you try and integrate TFS to all that other stuff?!?! Mad. www.ubersvn.com might interest you, it gives a swanky new interface to SVN, and provides an ALM platform, so removes a lot of the issues of getting used to SVN! Also takes about 15 minutes to d/l, install and have a play.

Still can't get over one of your guys installing TFS

Ian,

The backend Database, are you using SQL or Oracle? Don't worry about being in the dark ages thats ok. We have to get the current situation fixed first. The sleeping users can be a problem and I would frequently remove them automatically. Go to Tools|Remove Lost Connections and select Enable Rmoving Lost Connections set the threshold at 5 minutes.

Second when is the last time you did a verify and repair and a reindex of the database?

Answer these two questions and we can move on from there.

Joe Townsend

I do like CMCrossroads. The people on here are so very helpful. Thank you all :)

backend database - SQL
Will look at removing sleeping users Monday (got emergency issues to fix today and major new client going live with 1st lottery draw sat)

Last verify / repair / reindex of database was at least 5 years ago I am being told!!!

Ian,

Wow. That is probably the issue. First run a Verify on the database. Check the errors, some are common and no big issue, but since it has been that long you may want to send the report to Serena if you have a supportnet plan. If not attach the Verify Report to this and I will look it over. Everyone has to be out of the system and login to Tracker turned off before you runb the verify. (Just to let you know I ran one on Tracker at least once a quarter) So a minimum of 4 times a year someitmes more, if I added more projects and users.

Setting up the remove lost connections takes 10 seconds to do on the Administrator tool, and then you don't have to worry about it.

Let me know if you need help.

Joe

right then, i havent had anytime yet to reindex or verify the database but I was checking the sleeping users as I set them up last week to be killed after an hour but they all still seem to be there (hundreds and hundreds of them)

Any idea why that would be?
